Asymmetric Ocean Response to Atmospheric Forcing in an Island Wake: A 35-Year High-Resolution Study

نویسندگان

چکیده

The present study assesses the thermal variability of regional ocean around Madeira Island, in intraseasonal and interdecadal time scales, using a 35-year (1983–2017), 3-km horizontal resolution simulation forced by co-located atmospheric simulation, with SODA ERA5 boundary initial conditions, respectively. Atmosphere–ocean interactions this region are found to be driven two quasi-permanent tip-jets, located at island west east tips, especially during summer months. response is larger regions higher jets speed variability, but its highly asymmetrical. On scale, significant intensification both analyzed period more prominent tip, signature mostly associated much reduced sea surface temperature trend near tip.

Global ocean response to orbital forcing in the Holocene

[1] Global upper ocean evolution in the Holocene is studied in two coupled ocean-atmosphere models under orbital forcing conditions at 3, 6, 8, and 11 ka. The annual mean sea surface temperature (SST) changes in the early to mid-Holocene are found to be forced mainly by the annual mean insolation forcing with an overall symmetric response of colder equator (<0.5 C)/warmer high latitudes (<0.4 C...

U.K. HiGEM: Impacts of Desert Dust Radiative Forcing in a High-Resolution Atmospheric GCM

This work investigates the impacts ofmineral dust aerosol on climate using the atmospheric component of the U.K. High-Resolution Global Environmental Model (HiGEM) with an interactive embedded mineral dust scheme. It extends earlier work by Woodage et al. in which direct radiative forcing due to dust was calculated and inwhich it was reported that the global total dust burdenwas increasedwhen t...

Monsoonal response to mid-holocene orbital forcing in a high resolution GCM

In this study, we use a sophisticated highresolution atmosphere-ocean coupled climate model, ECEarth, to investigate the effect of Mid-Holocene orbital forcing on summer monsoons on both hemispheres. During the Mid-Holocene (6 ka), there was more summer insolation on the Northern Hemisphere than today, which intensified the meridional temperature and pressure gradients. Over North Africa, monso...

Global atmospheric forcing data for Arctic ice-ocean modeling

We compare three forcing data sets, all variants of NCEP forcing, in global ice-ocean simulations and evaluate them for use in Arctic model studies. The data sets include the standard Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP) protocol, standard NCEP forcing fields, and the data set of Large and Yeager (2004). We explore their performance in Arctic simulations using a global, coupled, s...
